''ED'' PRONUNCIATION

Hi, How are you ? Welcome back to this section!

This post will be rewarding for all of you, especially if you want to sound like a native speaker. This day I will present you the ''ed'' pronunciation in past tense regular verbs. I realized that this topic is very important because I often hear many people that don't know how to pronounce. Because our native language is Spanish, we are used to pronouncing all the words as we write. Nevertheless, English is very different. To begin ,let's warm up and review all you may know.

SIMPLE PAST TENSE :
Structure:

SUBJECT  +  VERB (PAST TENSE FORM)  + COMPLEMENT
Example :
    I went to the office yesterday.
    My mother cooked ''Lomo Saltado'' last week.
    Maria failed the test last month.

Remember that the Simple Pasr Tense always have a ''Time Expression'' such as yesterday, last week,last month and so on. Otherwise , use the Present Perfect Tense if not the meaning will change.
   For example:
    I ate three apples. (Not so common)
    I've eaten three apples (CORRECT )

So, now you've remembered all about the past tense. So let's look at the pronunciation of the ''ed''.

3 USEFUL IDIOMS IN ENGLISH

Bienvenidos de vuelta a la sección a de English. Hoy les presentare 5 expresiones idiomáticas que te harán sonar como un hablante nativo. Aquí están:

1.- BE UNDER THE WEATHER
Quizás estes pensando en que esto tiene algo que ver con el clima , pero no es cierto. Este ''idiom'' muy útil significa ''estar enfermo''.Ejemplo:
I couldn't go to the meeting because I was under the weather.

2.- BE IN SOMEONE'S SHADOW
Supongamos que estes haciendo comparaciones entre dos personas , esta frase es muy usada cuando te quieres referir a que uno de ellos recibe menos atención. Ejemplo-
 I'm in my sister's shadow. she is so succesful that sometimes I feel jealous.
(Nobody cares about me )

 3.-THE SAME OLD STORY 
Esta es muy usada cuando queremos hablar de acciones ya repetidas y que quizas no son de tanto agrado. Significa el ''mismo cuento de siempre (Figurativo)''.
 A: Why is Franz sad?
 B: You know? He and his girlfriend always argue. Last night, I thought they made up, but it was the same old story.

 Recordar que ''story'' y ''history'' no son lo mismo y que a muchas veces causan confusión.
 STORY:  Generalmente se refiere a cuentos .
HISTORY: La materia que se lleva en el colegio.

International exams

Hola, estimados seguidores de este espacio.Tras una semana de vacaciones y no publicar, les hablaré sobre los exámenes internacionales en inglés.Asimismo, a partir de ahora, los artículos de esta sección estarán escritos en la lengua que estamos aprendiendo. So, let's start!

It's time to face an international exam and you might be worried about that . Feel better beacuse now I'm going to give you some tips for being ready and having good scores. 

Listening part:

You must know most international exams are made to commite some mistakes. For example, when an audio recording is playing, you probably know only ´´key´´ words and thats good because it's not neccesary to understand all the audio. What I mean when I say that ? Easy, most students concretrate just in unknown words and they get shocked (All their minds became blocked)and that's bad, even if you're in an international exam. So, my first tip is about Listen for general information.

Perhaps, another factor of thinking listening tests are hard may be the lack of vocabulary. It happens especially if you study American English and you want to take a British exam. You have to note vocabulary will depend of the context you are in. Here are some differences between British and  American English.

Here some words: (The blue ones mean British while the yellow ones mean American)

flat = apartment

pavement= sidewalk

lift= elevator

And there are many others words.

Important: The pronunciation is a bit different, too. British english speakers omit the sound 'r' when it's put at the end of a word. 

Here's a sample: PET exam(For being in B1 level = low - intermediate)

Reading and writing:

In some exams(KET , PET ,FCE ,CAE) it's worth around 50% of your last score. This part of the main test is made in order to be sure the student knows how to use the properly way of the vocabulary and grammar. When you're reading an article wich is going to be provided in your test, you will find unknown words,too . Don't foccus on those ones beacause you will only get confused again. 

  

When you're writing, be sure on the number of words correspond to the instructions. It's not good to have less and more words they give you. So, Wacht out!

Be sure on what you are writing, you're using the correctly grammar and vocabulary according to the level you are in.

Speaking:

Maybe , the eaziest part for someones or the hardest one. Sometimes , the value of this part is around 25 %.  If you want to have a good score, you must use some common phrases  used in real English. For example, it's important to emphasis on what you are talking about. Try to make your pronuntiation as well as native speakers.

You must know there are 6 levels in english, according to Cambridge. From A1( Beginner) to  ,C2(Proficiency). Make sure on the exam you want to take. Here's a chart.

First tips

Bienvenidos otra vez a esta sección!

Vi la necesidad de empezar primero con esta publicación dado que para comenzar debemos conocer el alfabeto inglés .Finalmente, te daré algunos tips para que mejores en tus habilidades auditivas (Listening skills) ya que es una de las partes más complicadas de esta nueva aventura.

THE ALPHABET:

Como habrán podido ver, el alfabeto inglés difiere del español por la ausencia de "ñ".

Ojo._ Debemos tener en cuenta que existen muchos alfabetos fonéticos. En este caso estudiaremos con el IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) los cuales se encuentran en diccionarios tales como longman, oxford o macmillan.

Asimismo, es importante resaltar que para formular preguntas en inglés solo es necesario una grafía de interrogación que va colocado al final.

How to improve your listening skills?

Una de las partes más complicadas es definitivamente el "Listening". ¿Por qué muchas veces podemos entender correctamente a nuestro profesor de inglés o algún audio de un libro, mientras que cuando vemos una serie o escuchamos la Tv en inglés no entendemos casi nada ? Tal vez es una de las preguntas más frecuentes por muchos estudiantes, pero pueden haber varios factores tales como:

-Falta de vocabulario :_ Pues esto también incluye a las frases coloquiales que generalmente son escuchadas en el inglés cotidiano , una recomendación es usar los famosos "flashcards" que son tarjetas que contienen la palabra buscada, la pronunciación. Asimismo, se recomienda hacer oraciones con dichas palabras , pero no cualquier oración es decir debemos crear una tal que esta nos de la idea de la palabra que no conocemos, por ejemplo:
Usaremos la palabra "Beautiful" que significa hermoso o bello y formulamos la siguiente oración.

The sea is beautiful!

Si decimos "The sea is beautiful"( El mar es bello) es muy pobre y  prácticamente no estamos diciendo nada ya que el mar es "azul", en algunos casos verdoso, y  podría darnos a entender que "beautiful" significa "azul" lo cual es erróneo. Ahora veamos esta oración:

I like a lot the sea, it's so beautiful!

Al menos al decir "I like a lot the sea, it's so beautiful!"(Me gusta el mar, es tan bello) estamos describiendo más al adjetivo "beautiful" debido a que estamos usando el verbo "like"(Gustar) el cual nos da más idea ya que es obvio que nos gusta las cosas bonitas.

Pronunciation:_ Estudiar la fonética y la pronunciación es un punto a favor debido a que el inglés es una de las lenguas habladas muy rápido y es necesario saber los "contractions"(contracción)
así como los "linking" por ejemplo:-

Comfortable, es muy inusual decir  /ˈkʌmf(ə)rtəb(ə)l/ y generalmente dicen /ˈkʌmftəb^əl/ . 
 Es de suma importancia conocer la pronunciación te ayudará mucho en tus habilidades auditivas.
Otro tip es escuchando músicas, te recomiendo que escuches los "Beatles" ya que su pronunciación es muy clara a diferencia de otros artistas.

Life . Otra grande joya de la National Geographic. Tanto en sus dos versiones , americano y británico ,este libro tampoco nos ha defraudado. Viene con muchos más recursos tales como audios, videos , lecturas ,tips ,quiz .  Muy necesario para dar examenes internacional como el KET, PET , entre otros.
